Where to sow

Under cover sow seeds on the surface of moist seed compost and cover with sieved compost or vermiculite to the depth of the seeds. Place at a temperature of between 18-21°C (65-70°F) until germination which usually takes 10-21 days.

What to do next

When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into pots or trays. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for a few weeks before planting out after all risk of frost, 30-45cm (12-18″) apart in full sun. Late summer sowings should be overwintered in a coldframe and planted out the following spring.

July to September

Handy Tip

Cut back plants in the autumn and new shoots will reappear the following spring.
