WHEN TO SOW

April to March.

WHERE TO SOW

Early sowings can be made under glass at a temperature of 16 degrees celcius, sow into 8cm (3″) pots or modular trays filled with seed sowing compost. Outside sowings can be made from May onwards into the growing site 5cm (2″) deep. Sow 2-3 seeds every 20cm (8″) apart with rows spaced 45cm (18″) apart.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

Seedlings sown under glass should be gradually hardened off before planting outside to the above spacing in late May once all risk of frost has passed. Direct sown seedlings can be thinned out as required. Water regularly during dry weather.

MATURITY

July to September.

HANDY TIP

Sow small amounts at regular intervals to ensure a continuous supply of beans throughout the season. The purple beans turn green when cooked.
